The Elephant and the Rider

Imagine a rider on top of en elephant. Just walking down the trail, happy as can be. The the casual observer it appears as though the Rider is well in control of the Elephant. But let’s be honest, that elephant could do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted and that Rider could do nothing to stop it. He would be at that Elephant’s whim.

That is the same scenario as you and your emotions. The logical part of you, the “Rider” is most of the time, at the mercy of your emotional side, or the “Elephant”. This is a hypothesis introduced by a pyschologist named Jonathan Haidt.

You can never stop your emotions, just like the rider cannot truly stop the elephant. You can however point them in the right direction. The Elephant has to decide he wants to go in a certain direction. So do your emotions. Make sure they’re heading to a good place, not a bad one.
